Medical offices worked differently back before the Covid-19 pandemic. It was only a few months ago that in-person consults and crowded waiting rooms were the norm for medical offices. That all came to a sudden and unexpected stop as states shut down under temporary stay-at-home orders to minimize the transmission of Covid-19. Until there’s a vaccine many patients remain more comfortable receiving at least some of their care through a video screen.

Up until very recently, only one in every seven dermatology offices had ever used telemedicine in their practice, notes one survey from the American Academy of Dermatology. Only a small but steadily growing number of dermatologists gave telemedicine a try. Then Covid-19 changed the calculus of whether it was worth the time and investment it takes to jump into the digital health world.

In short order, teledermatology became an important way for dermatology practices to meet patient needs from a distance. Of course it doesn’t hurt that remote appointments also allow billing to continue in a time of financial challenges for medical practices. Sweeping legal and regulatory reforms related to telemedicine were quickly ushered in, which made the uptick in remote visits possible.
