Mark Montgomery is a 25-year innovator in specialty pharmacy. Recognized as one of the “Top 30 Most Influential People in Specialty Pharmacy” by Specialty Pharmacy Times Magazine, he has guided numerous organizations to broader, faster, and easier ways of opening specialty medication access to more populations than ever before possible. And, through these efforts, he has grown some of the world’s most successful specialty pharmacies.
Mark joined BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy in 2018 as the company’s president and was named CEO in October 2021. Under his leadership, BioPlus was ranked by Forbes Health as one of the “Best Online Pharmacies of 2023,” and as one of the nation’s “5 Best Online Pharmacies” by Money.com. He headed up the company’s 2023 acquisition by Elevance Health, the nation’s largest health plan.
President of BioPlus
As the Chief Operations Officer, Elvin Montanez, Pharm D., is responsible for the daily operations at BioPlus. He works on the day-to-day business relationships and internal systems of the organization while also focusing on big-picture, longer-term corporate key objectives and functions, including clinical services, brand programs, payer relations, technology, supply chain, revenue cycle management, and strategic investments.
Dr. Montanez joined BioPlus in 2011, where his experience in pharmacy and pharmaceutical services combined with his forward-thinking leadership skills in the healthcare field have been instrumental for BioPlus providing best-in-class service for the specialty pharmacy needs of patients nationwide, as well as overseeing and growing this specialty pharmacy as it expanded into multi-site operations.
Dr. Montanez has received industry awards, including the 2013 URAC Health Care Stars! Award for Consumer Engagement, and he’s a member of numerous professional organizations, including the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy, Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, and National Home Infusion Association. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Chief Operations Officer of BioPlus
As Senior Vice President of Finance, Barbara Weller manages BioPlus’ financial and accounting policies and prepares the annual corporate budget, including sales and revenue forecasts, along with capital and expense forecasting. In addition, she’s also responsible for the delivery of cost effective and efficient accounting and financial systems, while overseeing the development of policies and processes that meet the current and future business requirements of BioPlus.
Weller has been with BioPlus since 1991, when she was first hired as the primary accountant and over the following years she has seamlessly added responsibilities and advanced into her current position as the company grew.
VP BioPlus Finance
Bill Cook joined BioPlus in 2011 and since then he has served in several capacities, including now as Executive Vice President, Business Development. In this role, he serves as a member of the senior leadership team of BioPlus. He has an integral role in overseeing the growth of the company, and has spearheaded many winning moves for BioPlus, including the burgeoning 340B program and the new BioPlus Connect program.
Cook also leads the growing sales team at BioPlus, now approaching 100 team members. He brings nearly 30 years of healthcare sales executive experience to his work at BioPlus, including stints at Genentech, Accredo, and United Therapeutics. He serves on the board of a non-profit that helps combat veterans suffering with PTSD and TBI to transition back to civilian life.
VP Sales Strategy & Development
As Senior Director of Financial Planning & Analysis, David Glinter partners with the Executive Leadership Team to forecast the financial performance of the business and analyze opportunities to maximize growth and profitability. The goal of FP&A is to provide valuable business insights which in turn drives informed and targeted decision making across all facets of the organization.
David earned a Master of Accounting from the University of Florida and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Director II of Finance
Alan Blackhurt, MHA brings over 20 years of expertise in revenue cycle management to his role as VP of Revenue Cycle Management at BioPlus. For the past 11 years he has worked specifically in the pharmaceutical and infusion industries to bring an innovative approach to managing people, processes, and productivity.
He is passionate about collaborating with stakeholders and professionals to develop tailored programs and solutions to impact financial outcomes while maintaining a customer-centric culture. He earned a Master’s in Health Administration from the University of Ottawa.
VP Revenue Cycle Management
John Benfatti, Vice President of Outside Sales for BioPlus, is a clinically-focused sales management professional with two decades of healthcare industry experience. He has been consistently successful in delivering unparalleled revenue growth and customer engagement in some of the most competitive healthcare markets.
At BioPlus he is involved in forecasting, account development/management, budget maintenance and utilization, execution of strategic regional and national marketing initiatives, operational structure planning and pull-through, and recruitment/training resulting in retention and performance of top healthcare sales talent, as well as being involved with RFPs and contract negotiation. Over the many years of his career he has been consistently recognized as a best-in-class resource on product knowledge and managed care structure. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science & Health Promotion/Kinesiology from the University of Southern Colorado.
VP CarelonRx Outside Sales
Angie Houck joined BioPlus in 2008 as an Oncology Sales Representative. Over the years she has grown with the company, quickly working into leadership roles, and culminating with her current promotion as Senior Vice President of Sales Operations.
In her current position, Houck took on the responsibility of providing in-depth strategic and operational direction for the sales department while achieving maximum sales effectiveness to surpass company revenue and profit goals. Her tenure at BioPlus and experience utilizing and analyzing market data supports BioPlus’ vertical-specific initiatives. Outside her core role at BioPlus, she donates her time to several charitable cancer organizations in her community, as well as leading company-sponsored events as BioPlus supports organizations that help patients manage their chronic and complex conditions.
VP Sales Operation & Admin
Fred Gagle, as the Executive Vice President of IT, ensures that the IT infrastructure at BioPlus is reliable, cost effective, secure, and easy to support. His department is responsible for making sure patient health information is secure and protected. Gagle deeply understands IT’s potential for making things easier for patients, doctors, pharmacists, business partners, and employees.
Gagle earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Central Florida, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration–Information Systems from the University of Florida.
Director II of Technology
As Vice President of Trade, Dave Walker establishes and maintains strong relationships with pharmaceutical manufacturers across key market verticals. Walker has over 30 years of healthcare experience, focused in specialty pharmacy, home infusion, retail, and DME sectors. He has extensive industry experience as it pertains to pharma business development, product access, sourcing solutions, GPO partnerships, and pharmacy operations.
Prior to joining BioPlus, Walker led several specialty trade teams with organizations including EncompassRx, Prime Specialty, Walmart, AcariaHealth, Icore, and CuraScript. Walker also served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy from 2014-2017.
VP Pharma Contract Strategy
Mike Harris, Vice President of Payer Sales, brings more than 30 years’ experience in leading top performing sales teams and negotiating major managed care contracts across the country. Previously, he held leadership positions in Managed Care and Physician sales at Accredo and Magellan Health. Today, Harris is responsible for growing BioPlus’ current payer business while also establishing new relationships with health plans, PBMs and employer groups.
VP Pharma Contract Strategy
Luis Torres, as Vice President of Managed Care, supports both short- and long-term company growth while creating managed care strategies in partnership with clients. Torres brings more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry to his current position, with past roles including positions in managed care at both Walgreens and Amber Pharmacy. Torres holds a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Contract Director Rx Senior
As the Senior Vice President of Specialty Pharmacy Services, Nicholas Maroulis, Pharm D., manages the entire pharmacy at BioPlus. He’s involved in developing and driving innovative pharmacy benefits and operational strategies to ensure excellence for specialty pharmacy customers.
Dr. Maroulis completed his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Florida, College of Pharmacy, with his undergraduate studies at Florida A&M. He has held the position of Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Florida, College of Pharmacy since 2010.
Dr. Maroulis has been nominated for numerous awards, including URAC’s 2013 Health Care Stars! Award and the 2013 Next Generation Pharmacist Award. He has also been a dedicated member of the community, serving on the board of the Arbor School of Central Florida (2015-present), as well as participating in charity fundraising bicycle rides, including the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure and the Camp Boggy Creek Annual Challenge Ride.
VP Pharmacy Clinical Operations
As Senior Vice President of Operations for BioPlus, Dz Washington, Pharm D., oversees and manages the business. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Florida A&M University and also earned a Master of Business Administration from the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College.
Dr. Washington has more than 20 years of experience in the specialty pharmacy industry, and has spent more than 15 years in managerial and leadership roles with several leading health plans and specialty pharmacies. He has received additional training in Six Sigma through BMG and leadership through Dale Carnegie.
VP Pharmacy Clinical Operations
Craig Mears brings extensive experience as a healthcare executive to his current role as Vice President and General Manager of BioPlus Infusion Division. He has a demonstrated aptitude for creating and implementing innovative solutions to complex problems specifically in the specialty pharmacy field.
Prior to joining BioPlus, Mears held several executive positions, including as the Founder and Managing Director of PDI Advisors, LLC where he specialized in helping organizations develop differentiating strategies and programs to drive profitable growth and exceed their customer’s expectations, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Soleo Health, and Field General Manager – Hemophilia at Biogen Idec.
Mears earned a BA in Business Administration and is a member of numerous professional organizations including the National Hemophilia Foundation, Immune Deficiency Foundation, and many other patient advocacy organizations. In addition, he has served on the Board of Directors for the AFA Specialty Pharmacy Association, National Myositis Association, Columbus Ohio Hemophilia Chapter, and Dayton Ohio Hemophilia Chapter.
